Growing up in Māngere
Māngere was (and still is) a market-gardening centre with a number of Chinese families living there. There were also Māori and Indian families at the schools that Lily attended.
The Chinese community was small and very tight-knit. Families would know each other well. Contact with Pākehā was discouraged, but contact with Māori was a reality for Lily even when she was growing up in South Auckland. That was long before she met future husband David.
